The Williamson County Red Cross Share-A-Tune Club (see photos below) was created by Youth Council member Jihae Lee, a senior at Ravenwood High School. The group has performed at various assisted living centers in Williamson County. This club provides an opportunity for youth to be of service using their musical talents and gifts. Performances last approximately 1 hour and each member usually plays 10-15 minutes per performance.

Youth Leadership Development Camp a Success !

We had our first annual Youth Leadership Development Camp June 4th-8th here at our office. We had 10 youth attendees who spent four hours each day learning about the Red Cross, the various youth health and safety curriculums offered by our chapter and other leadership skills and techniques.

We certified 9 youth attendees as instructors through our Fundamentals of Instructor Training program. We worked in groups to develop and present a PSA (Public Service Announcement) to recruit more Red Cross volunteers. Each group also wrote a speech/presentation and presented it to the entire camp on the last day. We learned about leadership styles and functions, analyzed what motivates us, learned how to work as an effective member of a team, identified group decision making techniques and how to give constructive feedback. Each day included many ice breaker and team building games. We also played games that identified those in the group who tend to take leadership roles. We learned a lot about ourselves and how each of us is a leader and how we can contribute to our community, our country and to our world.

We will offer two separate leadership camp weeks next summer. Look for those
dates in early 2008!

Dinner and a Shot -- Thank You !

Our Dinner & a Shot event was a tremendous success. We had 30 youth
volunteers who served dinner to the over 120 people who attended the event.
Our youth volunteers also worked the drink station, worked in the kitchen to
prepare the food to be served and did anything that was asked of them. Our
youth volunteers represent 7 area high schools.

Our silent and live auctions had something for everyone. Thank you to Cathy
& Michael Kelly for all of their hard work with the auctions.

Our special guest was Troy Fleming, former Titan and current Denver Bronco.
Troy was gracious enough to pose for pictures and talk about football and
his career with everyone.

Our grand total, after expenses, was $10,186.47. We sent $3,000 of that to
the Measles Initiative to be used to vaccinate over 3,000 children against
this debilitating and deadly disease. The remaining proceeds will go to
purchase educational materials & supplies as well as fund future youth
training courses and service opportunities here at the Williamson County Red
Cross.

We wish to thank everyone who worked so hard on this event. Our youth and
adult volunteers, our DAT team, our paid staff, our Board of Directors, the
many local businesses who donated items for our auctions, the Flying Horse
restaurant for their help in preparing the food and training our amateur
waiters and waitresses, Sonja Rahman for her donation of beautiful table
settings, Polly Bibb at Franklinin.com, the Williamson AM, Zuzu Savage,
Aleesha Lane, Carol Cottingham and Amy Hart for their work with the youth of
Williamson County and Anna Hill of Sport Clips for her continues support for
our chapter.

Service Learning Projects Students

The Williamson County Red Cross always welcomes students who choose to do their Service Learning projects with our agency. These students work hard at our chapter office and we appreciate their energy and dedication.  We could not provide the services we do to those affected by disaster in our community if it wasn't for our wonderful
volunteers, old and young alike.

Franklin High School Red Cross Club

The Franklin High School Red Cross Club is sponsored by Carol Cottingham. The group began meeting in April of 2006. They have aised over $1,000 for the Gallatin tornado victims, made birthday cards for Meals on Wheels recipients and launched a backpack and school supply drive for school children affected by disaster. They've made cool ties and knitted head covers for deployed military personnel. And they assembled Thanksgiving food baskets for families in need as well as purchasing gift certificates for deployed military personnel redeemable worldwide at their AAFES, NEX and Coast Guard Exchange.

Franklin High School prepared 23 Thanksgiving Baskets for 23 needy families in Williamson County.

Each basket contained enough fixing for a complete Thanksgiving meal for the family and more.

Each basket contained a gift card for Kroger to purchase a Turkey and other items, and toys for the children in the family.

The members of this club worked very hard to decorate the boxes and pack them full of food!

Independence High School Marching Band took on a gardening project in 2006 and the Independence High School Red Cross Club collected money for the Thanksgiving basket drive.

Members of the Independence High School Marching Band took on an area behind the Boys & Girls Club as their gardening project.

Before and After Photos

These before and after pictures show how they cleared the area and added beautiful Crepe Myrtles, shrubs and flowers.

They worked tirelessly through the summer heat to complete this project.

The staff and youth from the Boys & Girls Club appreciated all of their hard work.

The Independence Red Cross Club collected money for the Thanksgiving Basket drive.

The members of the club then purchased food and gift cards for their baskets.

Youth Program Grant Winners - 2007

Winners are standing next to posters for the programs they will be implementing. Charity Small, the Volunteer Coordinator from the Sioux Empire Chapter in Sioux Falls, South Dakota received a grant for her youth program in partnership with the local fire department to install smoke detectors in homes without them. Tory Daughrity is the Executive Director for the Calloway County Chapter in Murray, KY and her grant is for her Youth Lock-In event this summer.

Room at The Inn

The Williamson County Red Cross Youth Council once again participated in the Room at the Inn project.

The Williamson County Red Cross Youth Council provided dinner and sack lunches for 10 homeless men.

The students prepared the meal.

The students also ate with the men and packed lunches for them to take the next morning.

We also made sure everything was cleaned up after the meal.

The FHS Red Cross Club also collected backpacks for the men and the youth volunteers filled them with toiletries, notebooks and pencils.
