Pictured above are Carmen and Bianca Jackson who spoke at our Annual Meeting/90th Birthday Party. They are Katrina evacuees who resettled in Franklin. Carmen spoke about the services she received from the Red Cross.  She expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the work we do. Her daughter, Bianca, is giving back to the community as an active member of the Franklin High School Red Cross Club. Bianca was elected attendance officer for the 2007-2008 school year. Thank you both so much!

Pictured above:  Craig Hutto. We are so grateful to him for his willingness to tell his story at our office recently. Craig is a well-spoken and very personable young man who came to talk about the importance
of an adequate blood supply. He shared his experience with us and answered all of our questions. Craig will be attending MTSU in the fall and we wish him the best.

We are proud to announce that Jihae Lee, a graduate of Ravenwood High School, was awarded the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for her efforts in creating our Share a Tune Program. The Share a Tune program has served as a bridge between our youth volunteers and our senior population here in Williamson County. Jihae has worked hard to recruit musicians and is always present to play at scheduled events and accompany fellow musicians during their performances. We have had 8 wonderful and well received performances since the beginning of the program in 2006. We are extremely grateful to Jihae for all she has done for the Williamson County Red Cross and our community. We wish her well as she moves on to college.

We need a volunteer to help the youth program with data entry once or twice a week for 2-4 hours.  We need someone who is willing to input youth information, event information and service hours into our human resource database.  All volunteers are required to provide information for a background check, which is done free of charge. Please contact Cristina for more information.

    Calendar of Events DETAILS

Share a Tune Club - The Williamson County Red Cross Youth Council invites all interested musicians to join our "Share a Tune" program.  We play at local nursing homes, hospitals and assisted living centers. This club provides an opportunity for youth to be of service using their musical talents and gifts.  Performances last approximately 1 hour and each member usually plays 10-15 minutes per performance.  To book this group of talented musicians for your organization, please contact us at 790-5785 or at youth@williamsoncountyredcross.org.

Office Volunteer - We need youth volunteers to help at our office at 129 W. Fowlkes Street, #100, Franklin, 37064.

Blood Drives - We always need youth to help out by working the registration table at our community blood drives.  The duties include greeting blood donors, having them sign in, providing them with the donor handbook and keeping the canteen stocked.

DAT Classes - Take the opportunity to be a part of our DAT (Disaster Action Team).  Free training classes include:  Intro to Disaster, Mass Care, Disaster Assessment, and Family Services.  Read more detailed descriptions of these classes by visiting our DAT corner.  You must be registered to attend a class.  All classes are held at the
chapter office at 129 W. Fowlkes Street #100, Franklin 37064.

CPR & First Aid Classes - We encourage all of our Youth Council members and our Red Cross Club members to become trained in CPR and First Aid. Read more detailed descriptions of these classes by visiting our Community CPR/First Aid Training page.  You must be registered to attend the classes. All classes are held at the chapter office at 129 W. Fowlkes Street #100, Franklin 37064.

GRANT RECEIVED -- The Williamson County Red Cross Youth Program has applied for and received a grant from the Red Cross Office of the National Chair of Volunteers. This grant will help to fund our new program titled Trained. Empowered. Prepared. Youth Educating Youth in Williamson County. This program will allow our high school age volunteers to receive the training necessary to teach three elementary school curriculums:

-Scrubby Bear - A program that educates children on the importance of proper hand washing to stop the spread of germs.
    - F.A.C.T. - First Aid for Children Today.
    - Home Alone - A program that teaches safety for children when they are home alone.

The grant also includes full participation fee, housing and travel for the Youth Director to attend the 2007 American Red Cross Volunteer Administration Institute (VAI) in San Antonio, TX, January 21-24th.

EXPLORING POST - Our chapter office is also an Exploring Post. Participants in the Explorer Program gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on activities. For young men and women who are interested in exploring a career in social services and/or emergency service, our Exploring Program offers many opportunities to gain a better understanding of what these career choices have to offer. For more information please contact our Youth Director, Cristina Archie at 790-5785.

Please contact our Youth Director, Cristina Archie at 790-5785 or email her here.  She would be delighted to sit down with the principal or faculty member from your school and share the benefits of having a Red Cross Club in your school.

Past activities – Assembled military comfort kits, mulched trails at Radnor Lake, visited nursing home residents, provided a garden area for the Community Child Care Center, created thank-you cards for blood donors, created birthday cards for those residents who have meals delivered to them through the Meals on Wheels program, provided office support during hurricanes Katrina & Rita, fed a group of 10 homeless men at a local “Room at the Inn” event, participated in a number of fundraisers to benefit the chapter including “Taste of Cool Springs”, “Hecht’s Holiday Sale” and “Parisians Charity Sale”. The youth continue to promote community blood drives to increase the number of units collected as well as educate the public on the services provided by the Williamson County chapter of the American Red Cross.
    ___________________________________________

Today more than 94,000 youth volunteers, ages 14 to 24, serve in all lines of services in Red Cross chapters across the country. The American Red Cross welcomes youth as general volunteers and also takes advantage of the leadership potential of young people by placing them in roles that will help develop their leadership skills, such as course instruction and fundraising.

The American Red Cross educates, encourages and empowers youth to be role models in their communities so, as current and future leaders, they can further the mission and fundamental principles of the Red Cross and touch more lives nationwide and around the world.

Red Cross youth programs provide young people with opportunities to expand their knowledge of human needs in their community and abroad, to develop a sense of social responsibility to learn through the practical application of subjects they study in school. Our youth programs also allow young people to develop lifesaving and life-enhancing skills-the kinds of skills that will serve them and their community for a lifetime.
